How Common is Clergy Sexual Abuse—and Who’s Most Often Accused?

At this point, it’s difficult to deny that clergy sexual abuse is not an issue, both in Orange County and throughout the United States. No matter how much some groups have tried to stifle these discussions, these tough conversations are being had around the country—as they should be. It’s important to note that sexual abuse happens across all denominations and religions; however, many reported cases come from the Mormon church (the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) and the Catholic Church. This may be due to the organized structure of these institutions, while many other denominations are more loosely structured.

However, abuse also happens elsewhere; one large research study focused on abuse in Protestant churches. Research indicates an average of 260 reported cases per year—and reported cases are often far lower than actual case numbers.

The Long-Term Effects of Clergy Sexual Abuse

Clergy sexual abuse in Orange County can have a ripple effect on every part of a victim’s life. It’s not uncommon for a victim to lose their faith entirely and develop a deep mistrust of religious figures specifically and authority figures in general.

Sexual abuse at a young age can also cause victims to adopt hypersexual behaviors later in life, which puts them at risk of unwanted pregnancies, sexually-transmitted illnesses, and mental health concerns that are correlated with hypersexuality.

Finally, many victims are left with a profound sense of guilt that can follow them their entire lives. Guilt can have a wide range of negative effects, leaving victims struggling to connect with others, fully enjoy life, and take steps to find meaning in life.

What California Law Has to Say

Orange County Clergy Sexual Abuse LawyerCalifornia has taken significant steps to protect victims of sexual abuse, including those who have been victimized by members of the clergy. Assembly Bill 218, which went into effect at the start of 2020, significantly expanded the statute of limitations for childhood victims. Victims of childhood sexual assault were once only permitted to seek compensation until the age of 26. This bill increased the statute of limitations to 22 years after the age of majority, which is 18 in California. Furthermore, this law allows victims to recover treble damages if the assault occurred due to a coverup.

Another important piece of legislation is Assembly Bill 2777, known as the Sexual Abuse and Cover Up Accountability Act. This law went into effect in 2023 and gives adult survivors more time to pursue lawsuits in certain situations. These situations include cases where the victim was 18 or older, an entity—such as a religious institution—was responsible for the abuse, and the entity attempted to keep the information from becoming public.

Whether you are seeking justice for yourself or your child, time is of the essence.
